A Work of Art Gallery & Gifts is a cooperative art gallery in historic downtown Bristol, owned and operated fully by the artists. We showcase and sell 2D and 3D original and handmade artwork and gifts. Our name was changed from 606 State Street Gallery to A Work of Art Gallery & Gifts in 2014 to reflect our change in address to 600 State Street and our expansion of offerings to include gifts. A Work of Art provides a venue for a diverse variety of art sales, art classes, and downtown events.

Read on to find out more about who and what we are:
We are downtown.
Our unique gallery is situated on historic State Street, a road that divides Bristol into the two states of Virginia and Tennessee and features specialty gift shops, more art galleries, cafes, restaurants, antique shops, a variety of theater, live music, street festivals like the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, celebrating Bristol’s heritage as the Birthplace of Country Music.
We are all local.
Although the gallery is located on the Tennessee side of the Virginia/Tennessee state line, our artists are from both Virginia and Tennessee…and North Carolina! Since our gallery was established two doors down at 606 in early 2010, we’ve been cooperatively owned and run by artist members from Bristol, Abingdon, Piney Flats, Kingsport, Elizabethton, Johnson City, Bluff City, Blountville, and more.
We have a huge variety of media.
We have many artists who focus on unconventional techniques – wax encaustic art, wine bottle art, hand-crafted furniture, and nostalgic miniature building models – and then we have artists who specialize in traditional media like painting, photography, woodworking, jewelry-making, pottery, and stained glass. To sum it all up, the gallery provides a professional exhibition space for our members and a venue for a diverse variety of art and gift sales including:
- Wooden Furniture
- Stained Glass
- Fine Art Crafts
We have the largest collection of Bristol-specific gifts in the area.
We have Bristol-specific photography, postcards, notecards, and pottery. Make sure to call or stop by if you need a Bristol-specific gift or souvenir!
We are affordable.
The artists get 85% of their own sales, and the gallery only keeps 15% commission, so we are able to keep prices of our works really affordable as an artist cooperative. We try our best to break the force field of perceptions that are sometimes placed on art galleries, with quality works available for all price points from $5-$1000+.
We are welcoming and open to the public.
No appointment is ever necessary during our hours of operation, and anybody’s welcome. Our gallery is truly a welcoming, egalitarian kind of place, and there is always an artist member of the cooperative working.
We are an artist network.
Our artist members are supporters of the arts and juried two-dimensional and three-dimensional artists. We believe in the importance of belonging to a network of peers who share the same interests and support the arts just as much as the rest of us. We enjoy hearing artists’ stories, gaining feedback from other artists, and being involved in the local art community.
We are not just about selling artwork.
We are part of the Arts & Entertainment District in Downtown Bristol, and we try our best to build an audience for the arts in general. Alongside our visual art focus, we express our appreciation for the other various forms of art through events at the gallery, including music events.
We are community-focused.
We are a gallery of quality, regional artwork, and we are a business that builds upon the varied strengths of our community.
